Contributer/s: Karmele Perez Urraza, Gurutze Ezkurdia, Begoña Bilbao

Abstract :  Education is one of the most important points on the identity creation procedure because of its influence on the individual development and the reflection it supposes for society's language and culture.

Taking this hypothesis as a starting point, we have analysed the textbooks which are being used in the schools of the Basque Country, located in the south-west of Europe. Cosidering the contents of the curriculum, the iconographic contents of the textbooks have been analysed in relation to the context. Textbooks produced in the XXth century in Basque, French and Spanish and used in the Primary School in Spain and in the CM2 in France have been chosen for the sample.

The research is limited to 70 Basque textbooks which summarize the assessment of their content and iconography during the 20th century, guided by the three different sociological stages known at teaching (1st period: 1876-1974; 2nd period: 1975-1991; and 3rd period: 1991-2000). 13310 pages were read and 22228 icons were analyzed, located and described during the whole process.

1- Textbooks produced in the Basque Country in three different languages (Basque, French and Spanish) do not match the same pattern.

2- Northern Basque Country textbooks are produced to fulfill French and European idiosyncrasies while Southern Basque Country textbooks fulfill Spanish pattern but not anyone else.
