Programme description
Pre Conference Tour – The 5th until the 8th of July 2008
Amsterdam
In the beginning there was..... water. To be precise there was the river Amstel and the IJ which flowed into the sea. In order to protect their river bank settlements against flooding, the early inhabitants constructed a dam in the Amstel in 1270: "Amestelledamme". This later changed into Amsterdam and the city as we know it today, was born! More and more people came from all over Europe to settle in Amsterdam. In order to be able to house everyone the city fathers decided to expand the city by digging broad canals. It is on these canals that the merchants commissioned their beautiful mansions. Amsterdam is famous for its atmosphere and its compactness. Nowhere else in the world is there so much to offer per square meter. Museums, shopping streets, monuments, markets and other places of interest are all within walking distance from one another. You are the guest of a unique city: Amsterdam. A city that is alive 24 hours per day. A city where the possibilities are limited only by your own imagination.

During the Pre Tour Conference you will stay in the Museum Hotel in Amsterdam.
Museum Hotel Amsterdam ***
The partly renovated (2007) Museum Hotel Amsterdam is ideally situated on the corner of the sophisticated P.C. Hooftstraat and the charming Stadhouderskade. Just a stone’s throw away from the Museumplein (museum square) with its renowned museums and the Leidseplein (Leidse square) that is famous for its vibrant nightlife.
The Museum Hotel Amsterdam is an ideal starting point for those who want to visit Amsterdam’s most important sights in a limited amount of time. The Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum can all be reached within a few minutes walk. The Leidse Square, where the Casino and Leidse Theatre are situated, are just as close and even the lovely Vondelpark is nearby. After a day of shopping in the fashionable P.C. Hooftstraat it is a delight to take a stroll through the park. All rooms in this hotel are nicely decorated and equipped with a private bathroom, television, telephone, hair drier, mini bar, sitting area, desk and air conditioning. Naturally, you are welcome in the stylish hotel bar during the day and in the evening. Upon departure you can store your valuables in a safe at the reception.

- Guided tour through Haarlem with a visit to Grote Markt, Grote Kerk and Hofjestocht
Grote Markt
You are bound to notice something else as well, when walking through Haarlem's city centre: the great variety of shops. It should not surprise you, therefore, to learn that Haarlem has been officially designated best shopping city in Holland. The city owes this title, among other things, to the wide range of specialised stores and exclusive shops. And - not to be overlooked - the enjoyable market, every Monday and Saturday, in the location where it has been held for centuries: the Grote Markt. From whichever direction you enter Haarlem, the city welcomes you with beautiful flower arrangements on street corners, colourful parks and squares. In early spring the bulb fields stretching out for miles to the south-west of the city show off their unique colourful splendour.
Grote Kerk
The Grote Kerk or St.-Bavokerk is the largest church in the Dutch city of Haarlem. It is dedicated to Saint Bavo. It is built in the Gothic style of architecture and started its life as a Catholic church. It has been a cathedral from 1559 until it was confiscated in 1578 and converted to Protestantism. Subsequently a new Catholic cathedral known as the Cathedral of Saint Bavo was built in Haarlem. Until 1831 graves were made in the church. A local story is that there is a grave of a child who used to hit his mother. After a time his hand started growing above his grave, and a copper plate had to be installed on the grave to stop the hand from growing.
Hofjestocht
A hofje is a Dutch word for a courtyard with almshouses around it. They have existed since the Middle Ages. A hofje provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of hofjes in use. Hofjes are usually built in a U-shape with a yard or garden in the middle, and a gate as entrance. The shape of hofjes in most likely inspired by the (older) Begijnenhofjes -- religion-based women communities. Usually a distinction is made between the Begijnenhofjes, and 'regular' hofjes. The first ones were used only by (Catholic) women, who were supporting themselves. They were a sort of cloister. The latter however were more charitable institutions.
After walking around in the city centre of Haarlem you will be welcomed in restaurant Madame Marlie in Haarlem to have lunch.
Restaurant Madame Marlie
Lots of wood, the stairs, the windows, the ancient floors and the openness of the building underline, strengthen and support each other for modern influences. The interior and the looks of the building are ''new'' in Haarlem. Finally it has got a majestic character.
- Visit to the Frans Hals and Teylers Museum
Frans Hals Museum
Internationally famous as a museum of the Dutch Golden Age, the Frans Hals Museum is situated in a picturesque 17th-century building at Groot Heiligland, where hundreds of paintings and craft objects are on alternating display. You can still feel the atmosphere of all those years ago. The collection has been gradually built up by the city of Haarlem. The Prinsenhof – part of the town hall – actually boasted works of art as early as the 16th century. In the centuries that followed the collection was further enhanced with purchased, loaned, donated and commissioned works. In 1862 a Stedelijk Museum (civic museum) was officially opened in the town hall. It had 123 paintings and a catalogue. Eventually, when lack of space forced the museum to move elsewhere, a former Old Men’s Home at Groot Heiligland was made ready to accommodate it. The ‘Frans Hals Museum’ was opened there in 1913.
Teyler Museum
The Teyler Museum, located in Haarlem, is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. The museum was originally founded as a men's drawing school with money from the legacy of Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778). He was a wealthy cloth merchant and Amsterdam banker of Scottish descent, who bequeathed his fortune for the advancement of art and science. He was a Mennonite and follower of the Scottish Enlightenment. Nearby the museum is the Teylers Hofje, a hofje which was also funded by Teyler's legacy.

Beach Party in Zandvoort
