Amsterdam, long ago, was a small settlement on the river Amstel and later became the centre of 17th century world trade.  Today Amsterdam is a colorful international city, with its special appearance and independently minded inhabitants.  The Amsterdam Historical Museum tells the compelling story of the growth and heyday of this unique city.  Go on a fascinating journey of discovery down seven centuries of the city’s history, through the intimate rooms and courtyards of the former Civic Orphanage, where Amsterdam’s orphans once lived.

One of the best and most attractive ways to discover the city centre is by taking a tour on a comfortable round-trip boat.  The route leads past 17th century merchant’s houses, elegant bridges, beautiful church spires, a variety of different houseboats, and other interesting sights.
